WRA Celebrates Apprentices During National Apprenticeship Week

This week is National Apprenticeship Week and we want to celebrate our current apprentices and those who have graduated from our successful Apprenticeship Program.

The WRA Operations department has had an apprenticeship program for 11 years. The apprenticeship program develops our newly hired operator specialist to be the highly proficient operators that we can depend on.

The program requires that they receive 6000 hours of on-the-job training, earn their Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement, pass their Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Grade 1 and 2 Wastewater certification exams, and complete the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Water Environment Technology Apprenticeship Certificate.

To date there have been 35 employees enter the apprenticeship program, of those 33 have completed the program. Of the 33 that completed the program, 29 are still employed, leaving only 3 operator specialist that started before the program was developed.

Showing their dedication to their careers, majority of apprentices have gone on to pass their Iowa DNR Grade 3 and 4 exams even though a Grade 2 is all that is required.
