Hauled Waste

With its convenient location in central Iowa and capacity to treat many types of non-hazardous waste using advanced wastewater treatment technologies, the Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Facility is the preferred disposal facility for hauled waste in Iowa and the surrounding areas.  The WRF is accessible to authorized waste haulers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and operates a computerized scale system for easy and efficient disposal transactions.  The WRF also offers reasonable disposal fees for septage, approved car wash pits, and FOG waste as listed below.  Special rates may be calculated for certain types of industrial waste.

2017 Rates (2.1% increase effective March 1, 2017; update posted 1/19/17 8:07 am):

In Service Area Rate:           $0.01669/lb.  ($0.1392/gallon)
Out of Service Area Rate:    $0.02504/lb.  ($0.2088/gallon)
Fat, Oil, and Grease Rate:   $0.00196/lb.  ($0.0163/gallon)

All wastes must be pre-approved for disposal at the WRF and must be brought in by an authorized waste hauler.  For more information regarding hauled wastes, please see Chapter 118, Article III, Division 6 of the Municipal Code.   For questions pertaining to hauled waste, call (515) 323-8010 or 323-8133.

FOG Program

The Des Moines Wastewater Reclamation Authority (WRA) implemented the Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Ordinance in 2006 to help decrease the number of grease-related sewer blockages, backups, and sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs).  Sewer blockages and SSOs cause a direct threat to human health and the environment by causing sanitary sewer water to backup into home basements and/or businesses and overflow into the streets which drain to our rivers, lakes, and streams.  Since the inception of the FOG Ordinance, there has been a dramatic decrease in sewer blockages and SSOs.

There are over 2,000 food services establishments (FSEs) in the Des Moines Metro Area that are subject to the regulations within the FOG Ordinance.  The goal of the FOG Program is to educate FSE personnel on proper kitchen cleaning practices and to ensure grease removal devices (grease traps or grease interceptors) are being maintained responsibly by the business owners so as not to pass grease-laden water into the public sewer system.  For more information regarding the FOG Program, click on "FOG Program" to the left.

Industrial

The Des Moines Metropolitan Wastewater Reclamation Authority oversees over 50 permitted industrial facilities in the metro area.  Each facility is subject to specific regulations regarding wastewater discharge to the Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) depending on the nature of their business and industrial permit classification.  For more information regarding industrial pretreatment, click on "Industrial Pre-Treatment" to the left.

New Industrial Users or existing Industrial Users looking to expand operations should fill out an Industrial User Survey form and submit it to the WRA via fax (515-323-8063) or email for review prior to construction if possible.  The WRA may require specific wastewater pretreatment measures, sampling equipment, discharge sampling points, and/or other measures depending on the nature of your business.
